HILLSBORO — In a concerted effort to curb impaired driving during the holiday season, Hillsboro police arrested 23 individuals for DUI from Dec. 13 through Jan. 1, with nearly half of those arrests occurring as the new year rolled in.

The local police department’s participation in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, a national initiative supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), resulted in a significant number of arrests on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

The department reported that 12 out of the 23 total arrests happened within the span of under five hours as revelers rang in the new year.

Historically, December has been a dangerous month on the roads, with a staggering 4,500 fatalities due to alcohol-impaired driving accidents across the country in the last five years of the month alone.
