Vehicle rollover on Route 495 in Berlin injures seven, closes highway for hours

BERLIN — A serious motor vehicle rollover on Route 495 Northbound near mile marker 66.4 Wednesday night resulted in multiple injuries and a temporary highway closure, according to the Berlin Fire & EMS Department.

The incident, which occurred at 9:07 p.m., involved a single vehicle and required the extrication of one person trapped inside using the Jaws of Life.

Berlin Fire & EMS, alongside Berlin Police, responded to the scene after a dispatch from the Nashoba Valley Regional Emergency Communications Center.

A total of seven patients were reported, with two individuals sustaining serious injuries.

A Level 1 Mass Casualty Incident was declared, prompting additional ambulances to the scene.

Weather conditions prevented a medical helicopter from responding.

Two patients were transported to local hospitals, while five were taken to a regional trauma center.

Emergency crews worked until approximately 10:30 p.m., at which point the vehicle was removed, and all lanes were reopened to traffic.

The Berlin Fire & EMS expressed gratitude to mutual aid partners for their support, including Hudson, Bolton, Marlboro, Clinton, Boylston, Lancaster, Stow, Northborough Fire Departments, Worcester C-Med 2C2, Berlin Police, and Massachusetts State Police.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police, who are also the point of contact for further inquiries.
