NEW BEDFORD — A New Bedford man was arrested in connection with a purse-snatching incident involving an 82-year-old woman, police said.

On Dec. 18, at around 3 p.m., the elderly victim was loading groceries into her car in the Market Basket parking lot when a man approached her and forcibly took her pocketbook.

Despite her efforts to resist, the suspect overpowered her and fled on foot.

Detective Roberto Dacunha took on the case and discovered through his investigation that the suspect had used one of the stolen credit cards for several attempted transactions at businesses in the city’s north end.

Surveillance footage from these locations allowed officers to identify the suspect as Isaias Ferreira DaCosta, 31.

Dacunha applied for an arrest warrant and alerted all units to be on the lookout for DaCosta.

On Dec. 23, Detectives Nathaniel Almeida and Jonathan Miranda located DaCosta in the area of Holly Street and Ashley Boulevard, leading to his arrest.

DaCosta is facing charges of unarmed robbery of a victim over 60 years old and five counts of attempting to use the victim’s credit card.

He also had three other outstanding warrants.
