Barre man faces DUI, hit-and-run charges after I-89 crash

WATERBURY — Troopers from the Vermont State Police Berlin Barracks responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 south near mile marker 65.2 on Dec. 21.

One of the vehicles involved in the crash reportedly left the scene.

The fleeing vehicle was later found near exit 8 in Montpelier, where a traffic stop was conducted.

The driver, identified as 40-year-old Evan Wheeler of Barre, was found to be operating under the influence, according to the troopers’ investigation.

Wheeler was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.

He was subsequently released with a citation to appear in Washington County Superior Court – Criminal Division at a future date to face the charges.
