Sheldon bus driver accused of assaulting child

SHELDON — A school bus driver has been charged with simple assault and cruelty to a child after allegedly hitting a juvenile on his bus route in Sheldon.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 14, when Mitchell J. Boyer, 68, of Highgate Springs, reportedly struck a student with his hand, according to Vermont State Police.

Sheldon Elementary School officials reported the matter to the authorities at approximately 4:38 p.m. the same day.

Following an investigation, police confirmed that Boyer did strike the child.

The bus driver turned himself in to the state police on Dec. 16.

Boyer was cited and subsequently released with an order to appear in Franklin County Court on Jan. 30 at 8:30 a.m. to face the charges.

Terricel Transit, the Swanton-based bus company employing Boyer, is associated with the route where the alleged incident took place.

Details on the juvenile victim have not been disclosed due to privacy considerations.
