Inmate accused of assaulting correctional officer at Marble Valley

RUTLAND — An inmate at the Marble Valley Correctional Center is facing charges for allegedly assaulting a correctional officer, Vermont State Police said Wednesday.

Authorities identified the inmate as Justin Zayas-Sanchez, 23, of Fairhaven, who is being held on federal charges.

The accused reportedly splashed bodily fluids on Correction Officer Mitchell Blair, 45, of Rutland, causing minor eye irritation.

The Department of Corrections reported the incident, which occurred Wednesday morning, to state police.

Blair has since received medical attention and returned to duty.

The Vermont State Police are investigating the assault as a serious offense against a protected professional.

Further details on the charges and any additional penalties Zayas-Sanchez may face were not immediately available.
