ROYALTON — A high-speed chase on Interstate 89 ended with the arrest of a Braintree man on multiple charges including aggravated operation without consent of owner, gross negligent operation and eluding a police officer.

Shawn Carpenter, 46, was taken into custody Wednesday evening after troopers from the Royalton State Police barracks spotted a stolen vehicle and attempted to stop it around 6:43 p.m.

Carpenter failed to yield and sped south on the interstate, prompting a chase.

According to authorities, troopers did not engage in a high-speed pursuit but maintained visual contact while deploying spike strips near exit 2 southbound to slow the vehicle.

Despite flat tires, Carpenter continued driving up VT RT 132 until he crashed into a guardrail.

Troopers closed in on the crashed vehicle and found Carpenter still inside.

He was arrested without incident and found to be out on conditions of release for prior cases in Windsor and Orange counties.

Carpenter is scheduled to appear in Orange County Criminal Court Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
