New Bedford officers seize illegal firearm at local hotel

NEW BEDFORD — Patrol units responding to an emergency call at a local hotel have seized an illegal firearm, authorities said.

On Dec. 4, at around 7 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Marriot Fairfield Inn after receiving a call for assistance.

During their response, they discovered a Jennings .22 caliber handgun with a defaced serial number, along with a magazine and ammunition in one of the hotel rooms.

The gun’s owner, identified as Joshua Butler, 31, of New Bedford, was found in the hotel lobby having breakfast.

Butler was taken into custody and faces charges of possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number and possession of ammunition without a license.

Officer Matthew Couture was credited with the arrest.

New Bedford Police urge anyone with information regarding the incident or other crimes to contact them.
