Two charged in Highgate road-rage incident involving gunfire

HIGHGATE — A verbal altercation at a convenience store led to a road-rage incident and the firing of a gun on Friday morning, resulting in charges against two men.

The confrontation began at a local gas station and escalated on Highgate Road near Woods Hill Road at approximately 11:35 a.m.

According to Vermont State Police, Eric Martin, 37, of Enosburg, stopped abruptly in the road, engaging with another vehicle.

Jeremy Patterson, 22, a passenger in the second vehicle, allegedly fired a gun into the ground during the dispute.

Martin faces a charge of careless and negligent operation, while Patterson has been cited for reckless endangerment.

Neither man was injured in the incident.

Authorities closed Route 207 for an hour to investigate the scene, with assistance from the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Both men are expected to appear in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in St. Albans at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 16 for arraignment.
