BURLINGTON — A collision involving two vehicles on I-189 Westbound near Shelburne Road resulted in significant vehicle damage but no serious injuries on Nov. 17 at 4:22 p.m.

Vermont State Police responded to the incident after Alec Benoit, 30, of Colchester, driving a 2023 Mazda CX-50, rear-ended a 2021 Toyota Tacoma operated by Malachy Ferguson, 25, of Burlington.

Ferguson reportedly slammed on his brakes due to a sudden traffic halt, leading to Benoit striking Ferguson’s vehicle from behind.

The impact caused Ferguson’s vehicle to swerve into the median to avoid further collisions.

Both vehicles were at rest, Benoit’s in the traveling lane and Ferguson’s in the median ditch, when authorities arrived at the scene.

Neither driver reported injuries, although Ferguson was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, and there were no signs of impairment from either operator.

The vehicles, which sustained disabling damage, were towed away.

The road conditions were clear and dry at the time of the accident.

Traffic was impacted briefly as the scene was cleared and investigated by law enforcement.
