SHAFTSBURY — A single-vehicle crash on Bank St near Dunham Ave led to the arrest of a New York man on charges of DUI drugs and negligent operation, Vermont State Police reported Saturday.

Nelson J. Prew, 30, of Cambridge, New York, was taken into custody after his 2009 Audi A4 crossed the center line and struck a telephone pole on the morning of Nov. 11.

The crash occurred under clear skies and on dry road conditions.

Prew, who was wearing his seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was evaluated by the Bennington Rescue Squad at the scene.

Following observations of impairment, Prew was screened for drug use and subsequently arrested.

After processing at the Shaftsbury Barracks, with assistance from a Drug Recognition Expert from the Winhall Police Department, Prew was released to a sober adult.

He is expected to respond to the charges at a later date.

In addition to the DUI drugs and negligent operation charges, Prew received two Vermont Civil Violation Complaints for traffic violations on the roadway.
