Springfield prison inmate cited for theft of prescription drugs from medical room

SPRINGFIELD –– An inmate at the Southern State Correctional Center has been cited for theft after allegedly stealing prescription medication from the facility’s medical room, Vermont State Police reported today.

Louis B. Tobin, 36, of Bennington, was found in possession of numerous controlled substances following an investigation by the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Vermont Department of Corrections staff.

The investigation was launched after corrections personnel reported several medications missing.

Authorities said Tobin took advantage of an unsecured door in the “GHI” wing to access the medical room and remove the drugs.

After the discovery of the missing medications, staff and investigators were able to quickly identify Tobin as the suspect.

Tobin has received a citation for the theft and will face charges related to the incident.

The Department of Corrections is reviewing security procedures to prevent future occurrences.
