NEWFANE — A Brookline man was arrested Tuesday after deputies say he drove negligently through a work zone on VT Route 30 and failed to comply with law enforcement.

Gabriel T. Smith, 54, was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle following an incident where he allegedly ignored traffic control devices and exhibited erratic driving behavior.

Deputy Thomas Raymond observed a 2021 Hyundai Venue with Massachusetts plates entering the work zone around noon and continuing south without yielding, according to the Windham County Sheriff’s Office.

Attempts to stop Smith using emergency lights were unsuccessful as he proceeded to Brattleboro.

A Be on the Lookout alert was issued, leading to his location by Brattleboro Police Department officers on Canal Street at approximately 4 p.m.

Smith was taken into custody and transported to the Windham County Sheriff’s Office for processing.

Afterward, he was released on a criminal citation to appear in Windham Superior Court, Criminal Division at a later date.

Deputy Richard Yastrzemski also assisted in the investigation.

The incident remains under investigation by the Windham County Sheriff’s Office.
