Several injured during crash in Benson, driver facing charges

BENSON — Police responded to a two-vehicle crash in Benson yesterday.

The crash took place on Vermont Route 22A at around 6:50 p.m.

According to the report, James Heide, 35, of Summerfield, FL, was traveling north on Vermont Route 22A in the travel lane, before crossing the center line and attempting to pass several vehicles.

Heide then collided head-on with Philip Paradis, 35, of Rensselaer, NY, who was traveling south in the south travel lane.

Heide was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.

Terry Mejia, 37, was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center for serious injuries.

Police say two juvenile passengers were also transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center out of an abundance of caution.

Following an investigation, it was found that Heide was operating the vehicle in a grossly negligent manner when he attempted to pass multiple vehicles near the crest of a hill, causing a head-on collision.

Heide was issued a citation to appear in court to answer to the charge of grossly negligent operation.

Troopers were assisted on the scene by Fair Haven Police Department, Fair Haven Rescue, Poultney EMS, Granville NY EMS, and Benson Fire Department.
