Traffic stop leads to DUI drug charges in St. Johnsbury

ST. JOHNSBURY — A 61-year-old man from Virginia was arrested for DUI drugs following an incident in St. Johnsbury yesterday.

Police say they observed a vehicle commit a traffic violation on US 5 near the intersection of Old Center Road at around 7:30 p.m.

Police say they followed the vehicle and observed additional moving violations.

They initiated a traffic stop shortly after and made contact with the driver, identified as John Meakem III, of McLean, Virginia.

During the encounter, police say they observed several signs of impairment.

Meakem was taken into custody and transported to the Vermont State Police St. Johnsbury barracks for processing.

He was cited to appear in court on February 26 for the charge.
