Two injured in Calais fire

CALAIS — Police are investigating a structure fire that broke out in Calais on this morning.

Authorities were notified of a structure fire that broke out at a single-family residence on Max Gray Road at around 8:20 a.m.

The first floor living room area was fully involved in fire when firefighters arrived.

Both occupants, who lived in the residence, were transported to Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, and later to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington to be treated for life-threatening injuries sustained from the fire.

They have been identified as Elizabeth Busch, 77, and William Klein, 80.

As part of Woodbury Fire Chief Paul Cerutti’s assessment of the fire, he contacted the Department of Public Safety Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit for assistance in determining the origin and cause of the fire.

Members of the Department of Public Safety Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit responded to the fire scene and conducted a scene examination.

The structure sustained extensive damage from fire, heat, and smoke.

Police say the cause of the fire is under investigation and at this time the fire does not appear to be the result of a criminal act.

State Police Victim services are currently assisting the family.
