Canterbury man drowns while fishing on Crane Neck Pond

CANTERBURY — A local man drowned Friday evening while fishing on Crane Neck Pond, authorities said.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. when New Hampshire State Police Dispatch received a distress call.

Multiple agencies including Canterbury, Concord and Belmont Fire Departments, along with Canterbury Police and New Hampshire State Police Troop D and Marine Patrol, responded to the call.

Upon arrival, they found an unresponsive male subject on the shore. He was later pronounced dead by the New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to the preliminary investigation by the Marine Patrol, the man was fishing from a canoe with his fiancée when the vessel capsized.

In an attempt to right the canoe, the man went underwater and did not resurface.

His fiancée was able to locate him, pull him to shore and began performing CPR before running to get help.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol Sergeant Nicholas Haroutunian at (603) 227-2112.
