WOODSTOCK –– Local authorities are warning residents of a new scam targeting people listed on the sex offender registry.

According to multiple reports, an individual, posing as a Lieutenant from the Windsor County Sheriff’s Department and US Marshalls Service, has been contacting potential victims and requesting money.

In one instance, the scammer convinced the victim that they had an active arrest warrant and directed them to transfer money via an app after visiting several stores.

The Windsor County Sheriff’s Department emphasized that they would never contact individuals over the phone to request payment, particularly relating to an arrest warrant.

Authorities are urging residents to be vigilant, report any suspicious calls, and remember that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never ask for payments over the phone.

Any residents who may have fallen victim to this scam are encouraged to contact the Windsor County Sheriff’s Department immediately.
