Tractor-trailer fire in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — A 68-year-old man from New York was involved in a crash in Charlotte today.

Authorities were notified of a tractor-trailer on fire attached to a HAZMAT trailer carrying diesel located near Route 7 and Patton Woods Road at around 1:50 p.m.

Police say they located the vehicle at a position of controlled rest in the pull-off, while the trailer was on fire.

The driver, identified as David Apowhid, of Gansevoort, NY, told police that he started to see some smoke coming from the trailer tires, he gradually pulled himself into the pull-off, which as a result started a fire on the right back rear well.

Police say the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

As a result, Apowhid sustained no injuries and due to disabling damage to the vehicle it was removed by Rick’s Towing.
