ALBURGH — The Vermont State Police has completed its investigation into a Jan. 31 brawl at a middle-school basketball game in Alburgh.

The case was reviewed by Grand Isle County State’s Attorney Doug DiSabito, who directed that five individuals receive citations related to their involvement in the fight.

  • Jacqueline Giroux, 30, of Alburgh.
  • Jacques Giroux, 32, of Alburgh.
  • Jason O’Leary, 30, of Alburgh.
  • Steven Carbone, 43, of St. Albans.
  • Damien Kieu, 24, of St. Albans.

The five individuals face misdemeanor charges of simple assault – mutual affray, and disorderly conduct.

After reviewing multiple videos of the incident, investigators determined that an ongoing verbal dispute during the game between groups of fans for the Alburgh and St. Albans boys’ basketball teams escalated into a fight on the court at the Alburgh Community Education Center.

No evidence was found to support criminal charges related to the death of Russell Giroux, 60, of Alburgh, who suffered a cardiac event while driving home from the school and was pronounced dead at the hospital two hours later.

The suspects are due for arraignment at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 11, 2023, in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in North Hero.

No further information is available at this time.
