Man falls through ice on Lake Champlain in Swanton

SWANTON — An 82-year-old man from Richmond is in critical condition after falling through the ice on Lake Champlain in Swanton on Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to a call at 2:17 p.m. reporting a man through the ice several hundred feet offshore in the vicinity of the intersection of Church and Hance roads.

The victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of relatives, was located and brought to shore about 30 minutes after the initial call by rescuers including the Swanton Village Fire Department.

The man was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans with life-threatening injuries.

His current condition is unknown.

Responding agencies included the Vermont State Police, the Swanton Village Fire Department, Missisquoi Valley Rescue, and the Swanton Police Department.
