Driver charged after clocked doing 87 mph on I-89 safety corridor in South Burlington

SOUTH BURLINGTON — A 39-year-old woman from Colchester was cited for negligent operation in South Burlington yesterday.

Police say they were conducting traffic enforcement along I-89 near exit 13 at around 6:00 p.m.

This section of I-89 has been designated as a “safety corridor” and has a posted speed limit of 55 miles-per-hour.

Police say they observed a vehicle traveling south at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle’s speed was recorded at 87 miles-per-hour.

A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as Ashley Smail.

Smail was issued a Vermont Civil Violation Complaint which carries a waiver penalty of $475 and two points.

She was also released on citation to appear in court on February 16 to answer the charge.
