WILLISTON — A 23-year-old man was arrested on multiple charges in Williston on Saturday.

Police initiated a traffic stop on a Subaru Legacy after it was seen speeding and weaving on I-89 north at around 10:00 p.m.

Police pulled over the vehicle and identified the driver as Matthew Melendy, of Ferrisburgh.

Police say they observed a rifle on the front passenger seat as well as alcoholic beverages within the vehicle.

The officer gained permission to secure the rifle for the duration of the stop.

When the officer went to the passenger side of Melendy’s vehicle to remove the rifle, Melendy fled the scene, traveling through a U-turn and proceeding southbound on I-89.

A brief pursuit lasted for around 4 miles, coming to a stop on Kennedy Drive.

Melendy was taken into custody without incident.

Melendy’s vehicle was towed from the scene and he was taken to the Williston Police Department for processing.

He was issued a citation to appear for the charges of driving under the influence, attempting to elude, negligent operation, and excessive speed.
