ST. JOHNSBURY — A 26-year-old man from Berlin was arrested for negligent operation following an incident in St. Johnsbury on Sunday.

Authorities were notified that a red Jeep Cherokee crashed on Pierce Road, near the entrance to a swimming hole where children often go.

The driver fled the scene and there were no occupants inside the vehicle when police arrived.

Police say there were Miller Lite and Natural Lights beer boxes that spilled from the vehicle.

Police identified the driver as Steven Chapin.

He was located and cited on Monday at the Northeastern Correctional Facility where he was held after a separate arrest earlier in the day.

Police say he will also be issued $200 worth of fines for littering the beer boxes that were found at the scene.
