PORTLAND, ME — The Portland Fire Department was called at 2:43 a.m. Monday, March 16, to Huston Commons at 72 Bishop St. for a fire alarm in a third-floor unit.
The first firefighters to arrive saw smoke coming from a unit in the building.
A small fire was found inside the unit and was quickly extinguished.
Fire investigators from the Portland Fire Department responded to the scene and worked with Portland police to begin an investigation.
During the investigation by the Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, suspicious materials were found, prompting the Hazardous Device Unit to respond.
After examining the materials, the Hazardous Device Unit determined there was no threat, and investigators were able to safely continue the investigation.
Investigators said it appears the occupant of the apartment tried to lower himself from a third-floor window using tied sheets before falling to the ground.
He was taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The investigation into the suspected arson continues, with charges pending.
