Officer assists residents during kitchen fire in Canaan

CANAAN, NH — A Canaan police officer forced entry into a smoke-filled home and helped extinguish a kitchen fire on March 11.

Officer Colton Jack of the Canaan Police Department responded to a reported kitchen fire at a residence in the 500 block of Canaan Street at approximately 8:45 p.m.

Jack encountered heavy smoke inside the home and determined that the fire could not be safely accessed through the main entrance.

The officer forced entry through a rear door of the residence and entered the home to locate the source of the fire.

Using a fire extinguisher, he helped knock down the flames until responding fire department personnel arrived on scene.

Jack and one resident were evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene and transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, where they were treated and observed for several hours for smoke inhalation before being released.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

The Canaan Police Department was assisted by the Enfield Police Department, Canaan Fire & Rescue, Lebanon Fire Department, Enfield Fire Department, Grafton Fire Department, Lyme Fire Department, Hanover Fire Department, Danbury Fire Department, Rumney Fire Department, and the Grafton Ambulance Service.
