Man arrested following knife threat incident in Montpelier

MONTPELIER, VT — A transient man was arrested after allegedly threatening another person with a knife during an altercation behind 100 State Street.

The Montpelier Police Department responded to a report of an altercation in the parking lot at approximately 3 p.m. March 11.

Upon arrival, officers observed Cormick Cantwell, 42, transient, walking toward Northfield Savings Bank while another individual, identified as Kristopher Salls, 45, of Montpelier, was yelling that Cantwell had threatened him with a knife.

During the subsequent investigation, officers determined that Cantwell had displayed a folding knife during the altercation.

Officers also determined that Cantwell was currently on court-ordered conditions of release prohibiting him from possessing dangerous or deadly weapons and engaging in threatening behavior.

Cantwell was taken into custody and transported to the Montpelier Police Department for processing.

Cantwell was later lodged at the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility on $1,000 bail.

Cantwell was issued a citation to appear at the Vermont Superior Court, Washington Criminal Division on March 12 at 11 a.m. to answer to the charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, violation of conditions of release and disorderly conduct.

Salls was issued a citation to appear at the Vermont Superior Court, Washington Criminal Division on March 12 at 12:30 p.m. to answer to the charge of disorderly conduct.
