DELHI, NY — A Delhi police officer and fire chief used an automated external defibrillator to save a 72-year-old woman who suffered cardiac arrest at her home March 2.
Delhi Police Officer Wyatt Malave and Bovina Fire Chief Kevin Brown were the first to arrive after the emergency call that afternoon.
The woman, a Delhi resident, had collapsed at her home.
Malave and Brown immediately began administering life-saving measures using an AED.
The device advised shocks on multiple occasions, which were administered as directed.
Brown performed CPR between shocks.
An AMR fly car and the Delhi Fire Department’s Emergency Squad arrived and assumed patient care.
The woman was transported to O’Connor Hospital.
At the O’Connor Emergency Department, the woman achieved a self-sustained heart rhythm and spontaneous breathing.
The department encourages community members, businesses and organizations to consider having AEDs accessible and ensuring personnel are trained in CPR and AED use.
