Firearm discharged into residence in New Hartford

NEW HARTFORD, NY — Police are investigating after a bullet struck a home on Barley Mow Run in the early morning hours on March 3, 2026.

The projectile impacted the front door of the residence, causing damage to portions of the exterior.

No injuries were reported.

New Hartford Police Evidence Technicians processed the scene and recovered the projectile.

Officers conducted a neighborhood canvass and interviewed residents in the area.

Police determined a licensed handgun was unintentionally discharged while being handled inside a neighboring residence.

Richard Evans was handling the firearm at the time it was discharged.

Evans was charged on March 4, 2026, with one count of reckless endangerment in the second degree, a Class A misdemeanor, and one count of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.

Evans was issued an appearance ticket to answer the charges in New Hartford Town Court at a later date.
