Business robbery reported in Newark

NEWARK, NJ — Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect in connection with a business robbery that occurred on Friday, February 20, 2026.

At approximately 7:50 a.m., the suspect entered a restaurant in the 100 block of South Street, purchased a cup of coffee, and announced a robbery using the Google Translate app, threatening to shoot the victim, a cashier, if she didn’t comply by opening the register.

When the victim ran away from the register, the suspect attempted to remove it, but was unable to take it.

He then threw his coffee at the victim and fled the business, heading eastbound on South Street.

The suspect was last seen walking eastbound on Tichenor Street toward the area of Pennington Court.

Detectives investigating this incident describe the suspect as a Black male, wearing all black clothing, and a black face mask.
