SOUTH HERO, VT — A Grand Isle County sheriff’s deputy injured when a driver struck him with a vehicle has been released from the hospital.
Sgt. Nicholas Pillsbury, of Essex, was discharged early Thursday morning from the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington and will continue his recovery at home.
He has worked for the sheriff’s department for the past 18 months.
The suspect, Kevin Marx, 36, of Grand Isle, appeared in court Thursday morning in North Hero, pleaded not guilty, and was ordered held without bail pending further court proceedings.
The incident occurred just after 8:10 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. Route 2 near the intersection with Ferry Road.
Initial information indicates Pillsbury was walking back to his cruiser after making a traffic stop when the driver who had just been pulled over turned around and steered into the deputy.
The vehicle dragged Pillsbury a considerable distance before eventually stopping in a wooded area off the road.
The deputy was pinned under the vehicle.
First responders extracted Pillsbury after approximately 30 minutes and brought him by ambulance to the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Marx ran from the scene.
Police located Marx at his home in Grand Isle shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday and took him into custody without incident.
Marx was charged with attempted first-degree murder.
