EAST LONGMEADOW, MA — A Springfield man was arrested after a homeowner reported watching someone break into their residence through a home surveillance camera system.

John Loranger, 43, of Springfield, was arrested and charged with breaking and entering in the daytime with intent to commit a felony, malicious destruction of property over $1,200, and larceny from a building.

Police responded to Speight Arden at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday after a resident called Westcomm dispatch to report the break-in in progress.

Sergeant Jason Guinipero confirmed evidence of a break-in at the home.

Shortly after, a resident on Elm Street called dispatch to report a suspicious man running through their backyard who appeared to be hiding.

Officer Michael Calcasola arrived at that residence and spotted a suspect matching the description in the front yard, who then ran into the back yard.

Calcasola began chasing the suspect on foot, and School Resource Officer Michael Healey joined the pursuit.

The suspect was captured after a short foot chase by Healey and Calcasola.

The Speight Arden resident returned home and confirmed property was missing.

Officer Timothy Driscoll located the missing property in a yard on Elm Street Extension.

The homeowner confirmed the suspect was known to them.

Loranger is scheduled to be arraigned in Palmer District Court.
