SPRINGFIELD, MA — Two people were arrested and two illegal firearms were seized following a months-long drug investigation on Worthington Street.
Members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit and the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department arrested the suspects at approximately 9:50 a.m. Wednesday.
Firearms Investigation Unit detectives had been investigating the illegal distribution of fentanyl and cocaine in the area of the 800 block of Worthington Street for the past two months, with Shadiamond Maldonado and Luis Sanchez-Perez as suspects.
Detectives applied for and were granted a search warrant for their apartment on the 800 block of Worthington Street on Tuesday.
Around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, detectives observed Sanchez-Perez on the 800 block of Worthington Street and placed him under arrest.
During a search, detectives recovered an illegal loaded firearm on Sanchez-Perez.
Detectives also seized approximately 42 bags of fentanyl and 5.7 grams of powder and crack-cocaine from Sanchez-Perez.
The search warrant was then executed, and Maldonado was taken into custody next to an open window.
Detectives recovered a loaded illegal handgun outside the window.
Two firearm magazines, including a high-capacity magazine, were located inside the apartment.
Detectives also located 38 rounds of loose ammunition and $409 in cash.
The firearm located on Sanchez-Perez was reported stolen out of Tennessee.
Maldonado, 22, of Springfield, is charged with possession of a firearm without an FID/LTC, possession of ammunition without an FID, possession of a Class A substance with intent to distribute, possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute, improper storage of a firearm, possession of a firearm in commission of a felony, conspiracy to violate narcotics drug laws and possession of a high-capacity feeding device.
Sanchez-Perez, 26, of Springfield, is charged with possession of a firearm without an FID/LTC, possession of ammunition without an FID, possession of a Class A substance with intent to distribute, possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute, improper storage of a firearm, possession of a firearm in commission of a felony, conspiracy to violate narcotics drug laws, receiving stolen property less than $1,200, carrying a firearm without an FID/LTC, carrying a loaded firearm without an LTC, convicted felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a high-capacity feeding device.
