Police warn of mortgage scam mailers in Hopkinton

1 min read

HOPKINTON, MA — Police are warning residents about suspicious mortgage-related letters circulating in the community.

The Hopkinton Police Department said it has received reports of letters marked “ORIGINAL DOCUMENT” and labeled as “Time Sensitive – Immediate Response Requested” that appear to reference mortgage lenders.

The mailers may look official and include lender information, but they are often solicitations for third-party services and are not necessarily from actual mortgage companies, police said.

Red flags include urgent language demanding immediate response, requests to call unfamiliar phone numbers, offers to obtain copies of deeds or mortgage documents for a fee, and mailers that look like official government or lender correspondence.

Police said mortgage lenders will not typically request sensitive information through unsolicited mail in this manner.

Official documents from lenders will clearly identify the company and provide verifiable contact information, police said.

Residents can contact their lender directly using the phone number listed on their mortgage statement or the lender’s official website.

Police advise residents who receive a suspicious mortgage-related letter not to call the number listed without verifying it independently and not to provide personal or financial information.

Residents can report concerns to the Hopkinton Police Department at (508) 497-3401.
