Single-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 in Brookfield

BROOKFIELD, VT — Vermont State Police are investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 89 North near mile marker 37.

Troopers from the Berlin barracks responded to the scene at 5:49 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of the crash.

Police identified the operator as Nicholas Lawliss, 46, of Barre City.

Lawliss was traveling northbound on Interstate 89 when his 2014 Subaru Outback slid off the road and landed on its roof, according to police.

A passenger, Matthew Barnett, 40, of Marshfield, was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Neither Lawliss nor Barnett were wearing seat belts, police said.

Both occupants sustained suspected minor injuries and were transported to Gifford Medical Center.

The vehicle was totaled in the crash.

During the investigation, troopers discovered that Lawliss was operating a motor vehicle with a criminally suspended license and was violating conditions of release, police said.

Lawliss was taken into custody and transported to the Berlin barracks for processing.

He was charged with two counts of violation of conditions of release, negligent operation and criminal driving with a suspended license.

Lawliss was arraigned at Vermont Superior Court, Orange Criminal Division, at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Road conditions were dry and weather was clear at the time of the crash.
