Sheriff warns of phone scam in Chemung County

CHEMUNG COUNTY, NY — The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an ongoing phone scam involving someone impersonating a sheriff’s office employee.

The agency said it continues to receive numerous calls from people reporting they have been contacted by an individual identifying himself as Lieutenant Green of the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office.

According to complainants, “Lt. Green” has told them a family member is at the Chemung County Jail and needs bail money.

The sheriff’s office said the calls are fraudulent.

No member of the sheriff’s office contacts the public under these circumstances demanding money, according to the agency.

The sheriff’s office is advising the public not to disclose any personal information over the phone, including credit or debit card information, and not to send any type of payment to anyone who identifies themselves as a law enforcement officer requesting money under these circumstances.

Anyone who receives a call of this nature should end the call immediately or advise the caller that the sheriff’s office is aware of the scam, the agency said.

Anyone who has received one of these calls or has been scammed out of money under these circumstances is asked to contact the sheriff’s office Criminal Investigation Division at 607-737-2933.
