WESTBROOK, ME — A pickup truck driver crashed into a semi-trailer and rolled over Tuesday afternoon following a brief police pursuit on Spring Street.
The Westbrook Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle operating erratically on Spring Street near the intersection with County Road at approximately 2:21 p.m.
A 911 caller reported witnessing a white pickup truck drive off the roadway and stated the driver either had a seizure or had overdosed.
The driver left the scene before officers arrived.
Uniformed patrol officers in marked cruisers located the pickup traveling northbound on Spring Street and attempted to stop it for erratic operation.
The driver failed to stop, passed numerous vehicles, and nearly collided head-on with a responding police cruiser.
The pickup then crashed into the rear of a northbound semi-trailer and rolled over near 85 Spring Street.
The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was evaluated at the scene by Westbrook Fire Rescue and transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not life threatening.
A small dog that was in the pickup truck was grievously injured and immediately taken by Westbrook police to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment.
The Westbrook Police Department is investigating the crash with the assistance of the Maine State Police.
