CAPE ELIZABETH, ME — The Cape Elizabeth Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers falsely identified themselves as department officials.
The scammers claimed to be Chief Paul Fenton and Clerk Ed Hunt, according to police.
The caller spoofed the department’s phone number to make it appear the call was coming directly from the police department.
The scammers then attempted to solicit money from a resident.
The individual recognized the call as a scam and ended the conversation.
Police said law enforcement will never call to demand payment or threaten arrest over the phone.
Authorities are advising residents who receive such calls to hang up immediately, not provide any personal or financial information, and report the incident to their local police department.
