AUBURN, NY — An incarcerated man died at a hospital after being found unresponsive in his cell at the Cayuga County Jail earlier this month.
Andre Denman, 43, was discovered unresponsive during a routine cell check just before 4 a.m. on Feb. 5.
Jail staff provided immediate medical care and called for an ambulance to the public safety building.
Denman was transported to Auburn Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts.
The New York State Attorney General’s Office was notified of the in-custody death as required by state law and is conducting an independent investigation.
Sheriff Brian Schenck said Denman was alone in his cell when he was found unresponsive.
The sheriff’s office denied social media claims that Denman was beaten while in custody, calling the allegations false.
The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting a forensic examination and autopsy.
Toxicology results are pending.
