Man cited on theft charges in Shaftsbury

SHAFTSBURY, VT — Vermont State Police were notified of a car break-in on Sycamore Lane at approximately 1:33 a.m. on Oct. 14.

It was later discovered that multiple motor vehicles had been broken into.

A credit card belonging to Gail L. Hostetter, 40, of Shaftsbury, was stolen from her motor vehicle.

Unauthorized purchases were made using Hostetter’s credit card.

After months of investigation involving video surveillance, eyewitness testimony and digital forensics, police linked Elijah M. Foucher, 22, of North Adams, Massachusetts, to several high-value purchases made with the credit card.

Foucher was brought to the Bennington Police Department for an interview on Feb. 15, 2026.

He was issued a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court – Bennington Criminal Division on April 13, 2026, at 8 a.m. to answer charges of grand larceny, identity theft, illegal possession of a credit card and false pretenses.

Foucher was processed at the Bennington Police Department and released.
