Man arrested on child endangerment, sex offense charges in Kearny

KEARNY, NJ — Members of the Kearny Police Department arrested a man on a warrant complaint stemming from an investigation into an incident at the town’s public library.

Rolando Carballo, 59, of East Newark, was arrested Feb. 7 on charges including endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual contact.

The charges arise from an incident reported to have occurred Jan. 16 at the Kearny Public Library.

The investigation, conducted by Detective Castaneda, determined that Carballo allegedly inappropriately touched a juvenile while displaying obscene material.

Carballo was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a third-degree offense; obscenity for persons under 18, a third-degree offense; criminal sexual contact, a fourth-degree offense; and lewdness, a disorderly persons offense.

Carballo was located and taken into custody in North Arlington by Detective Castaneda, assisted by other members of the Kearny Police Department.

Following his arrest, he was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

Chief Scott Macfie said the safety of children is non-negotiable and that public buildings, including libraries, must remain safe places for families.
