Man arrested on weapons charges in Utica

UTICA, NY — A 19-year-old man was arrested on multiple weapons charges after police discovered a handgun during a pat-down on Eagle Street.

Jaquel Phillips, of Utica, was taken into custody at approximately 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11, 2026, according to the Utica Police Department.

Officers with the GIVE Unit and Tactical Unit, along with deputies from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, were conducting proactive patrols in response to recent gun violence when they stopped Phillips near Park Avenue.

During the stop, officers developed cause to conduct a pat frisk and felt what appeared to be a handgun in Phillips’ waistband.

Officers lifted his shirt, confirmed it was a handgun and removed the weapon.

Phillips was transported to the Utica Police Department and charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree for an extended magazine, criminal possession of a firearm and vehicle and traffic law violations.
