HORSEHEADS, NY — A fire broke out at a residence on 4th Street in the village on Feb. 9.
A box alarm was dispatched to Horseheads Fire/Rescue Department for a reported dwelling fire.
Crews encountered heavy smoke and fire in the walls upon arrival.
Firefighters opened voids and crawl spaces to extinguish visible flames in a labor-intensive effort.
The incident was brought under control within 20 minutes.
Overhaul operations to check for fire extension took approximately an hour.
The Horseheads Fire Department fire investigator determined the cause to be accidental.
A kerosene heater placed too close to combustible materials sparked the blaze.
