SILVER CREEK, NY — Firefighters battled a structure fire behind a grape vineyard on Burgess Street on Monday afternoon.
Bay Creek Fire departments, including Silver Creek and Sunset Bay, were dispatched at 1:50 p.m. to the area of Burgess Street and Robinson Street for a reported fire of unknown type.
The district chief arrived on scene and reported heavy black smoke and flames coming from behind a grape vineyard and assumed command.
A utility terrain vehicle was able to access the area early and crews determined a structure-type building or large shed had already collapsed and a pickup truck was fully involved.
Due to the fire’s location approximately 500 feet from the road and deep snow conditions, the village Department of Public Works used a payloader to plow an access path for firefighters.
Engine companies were able to feed an attack line to extinguish the fire.
The UTV shuttled equipment and personnel to the structure.
Crews remained on location for about 1.5 hours.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire and save other campers and vehicles on the property.
Several pets were lost in the structure.
