EDWARDS, NY — New York State Police responded to a snowmobile trail off County Route 24 in the town of Edwards for a two-snowmobile collision on Feb. 1, 2026, at approximately 1:39 p.m.
An investigation determined that a 2016 Arctic Cat, operated by a 16-year-old male with an 18-year-old male passenger, both of Edwards, was traveling southwest and approaching a blind hill crest.
A 2021 Polaris Indy, operated by Gregory J. Coller, 50, of Canton, was traveling northeast and approaching the same hill crest.
Both snowmobiles were traveling near the middle of the trail when they struck each other head-on.
Star Lake Rescue and Gouverneur Rescue responded to the scene and provided medical care to all occupants.
The 18-year-old male passenger was transported to Gouverneur Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Coller was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The 16-year-old operator was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and is listed in stable but critical condition.
The investigation remains ongoing.
