CLIFTON, NJ — A Garfield man has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that occurred in October.

Jose Morillo, 58, of Garfield, was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, a second-degree crime, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Clifton Police Chief Thomas Rinaldi announced Monday.

On Oct. 4, at approximately 8:12 a.m., the Clifton Police Department was notified of an unresponsive female found on the side of Route 21 North near the Exit 9 entrance ramp onto Route 3 West.

Broken pieces from a motor vehicle were found scattered nearby.

The victim was identified as Kamaya Young, 20, of Paterson, and was pronounced deceased.

During the investigation, detectives determined Young was struck by a Porsche Cayenne operated by Morillo.

Morillo was processed on the charges Monday and is awaiting his first appearance at Central Judicial Processing.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office will file a motion for pre-trial detention to be heard by a Superior Court judge at a date to be determined.

Leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death carries a sentencing range of five to 10 years in state prison.
