CORTLAND, NY — Icy and snowy conditions caused multiple vehicles to leave roadways across Cortland County early Jan. 30, prompting responses from New York State Police, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department, and local towing services.
At approximately 6:17 a.m., a trooper responded to Interstate 81 north near mile marker 44.1 in the town of Virgil for a Ford Transit van in a snowbank.
The operator reported losing control while avoiding another vehicle.
No injuries or vehicle damage were reported.
Ron’s Towing helped remove the van.
At 7:32 a.m., a trooper responded to Clute Road in Virgil for a report of an SUV off the roadway.
The operator was uninjured, and the vehicle was undamaged.
Ron’s Towing winched the SUV from the ditch, enabling the driver to continue traveling.
At 7:50 a.m., a trooper responded to Interstate 81 north near mile marker 43.1 in Virgil, where a GMC pickup truck rolled after sliding off the road at unsafe speed, striking a delineator and a snowbank before overturning.
The operator, a 40-year-old woman from Castle Creek, was taken to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center for evaluation.
A 13-year-old female passenger was not injured.
At 7:51 a.m., a trooper responded to another incident on Interstate 81 in Virgil, where a BMW X5 went off the roadway.
No injuries or vehicle damage occurred, and Kaylee’s Towing helped remove the vehicle.
At 7:58 a.m., a single-vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 81 north near mile marker 61 in Preble, where a Kia sedan traveling too fast for road conditions left the roadway, damaging the rear passenger-side fender.
The operator reported no injuries.
Val-U Auto towed the vehicle.
At 8:13 a.m., a trooper responded to Interstate 81 south near mile marker 42.10, where a Nissan sedan traveling too fast for the conditions went off the roadway and struck a snowbank.
The operator was uninjured, but the vehicle sustained damage.
Val-U Auto assisted in removing the vehicle, and the operator was able to continue on.
At 9:11 a.m., a trooper responded to Interstate 81 south in the town of Homer for a pickup truck and U-Haul trailer in the median.
Both occupants were uninjured.
The vehicle, found to be traveling too fast for conditions, was towed by Morey’s.
At 9:22 a.m., a trooper responded to a two-vehicle crash on State Route 11 in Cortlandville.
Police determined a Toyota sedan failed to yield while making a left turn, colliding with a Chevrolet pickup truck.
No injuries were reported, and the vehicles were towed by Stupkes and Ron’s.
State police advised drivers to exercise caution and reduce speeds during winter weather conditions.
