Beagle found neglected in Shaftsbury

SHAFTSBURY, VT — Troopers responded to a report of animal cruelty on Shaftsbury Hollow Road on Jan. 23 at approximately 5:11 p.m.

Upon arrival, troopers found a beagle outside, chained to an exposed and uninsulated pallet structure without food, and a water bowl that was frozen solid.

The dog appeared to have been outside for several hours in temperatures below freezing.

Troopers observed the beagle shivering and cold to the touch.

According to police, Matilda E. Blodgett, 82, of Shaftsbury was responsible for the care of the beagle at the time.
Blodgett was issued a citation on scene.

The beagle was transported to the Mount Anthony Veterinary Hospital for evaluation.

A follow-up investigation with a veterinarian revealed suspected patterns of neglect.

The beagle’s owner was identified as Timothy S. Harrington, 47, of Shaftsbury, who has cooperated with troopers during the investigation.

Harrington was issued a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court – Bennington Criminal Division on March 30 at 8 a.m.

The beagle is listed in stable condition and is now being cared for at the Second Chance Animal Center.
