MADRID, NY — New York State Police charged Peter J. Caughey, 69, of Madrid, with menacing in the second degree on Jan. 28, 2026.

Troopers responded to North Street in the town of Madrid at approximately 11:37 a.m. for a report of harassment.

An investigation determined that Caughey and the victim were involved in a verbal argument, which escalated when Caughey allegedly brandished a knife and made threatening remarks toward the victim.

The incident later de-escalated, and Caughey returned to his room.

Caughey was arrested and transported to State Police Ogdensburg for processing.

He was released on an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Madrid Court at a later date in February.
