RIVERSIDE, NJ — A former Riverside Township resident wanted on sexual assault charges was arrested in North Carolina late Friday night following a multi-state investigation.

Gilmar Da Silva Carvalho, 29, was taken into custody by the Watauga County Sheriff’s Department after authorities determined he had fled New Jersey.

The Riverside Township Police Department began investigating the sexual assault of a juvenile within the township this past week.

During the investigation, detectives determined that an additional sexual assault involving the same suspect had occurred in Willingboro Township.

A warrant was issued for Carvalho’s arrest in coordination with the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office.

At the time the warrant was issued, the suspect’s immediate whereabouts were unknown, and information obtained during the investigation indicated he had left New Jersey.

The Riverside Township Police Department worked with the New Jersey State Police and the United States Marshals Service to locate the suspect.

Carvalho is currently being held in North Carolina pending extradition to New Jersey.

He was charged with multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual contact.
